Description
Summary:Background: Right heart catheterization is still a valid tool to measure pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR). PVR echocardiography with Abbas method hasnt been validated to determine PVR in adult atrial septal defect (ASD). Objectives: To seek whether Abbas method provides correlation with invasive measurement to determine PVR in adult ASD and whether PVR echocardiography can be used as a surrogate of invasive measurement. Method: Non-simultaneous echocardiography and right heart catheterization were performed in patients adult ASD in this retrospective cross-sectional study. PVR echocardiography using Abbas method with this equation : 10 x TRVmax/TVIrvot + 0.16 and this method was correlated with PVR invasive. The sensitivity and specificity of PVR echocardiography with Abbas method using cut off point of PVR > 3 WU was generated. Results: Thirty seven patients adult ASD with mean age 39 ± 13.7 included in this study with mean PVR invasive was 4.18 ± 6.94 and mean PVR echocardiography was 2.114 ± 1.49. Strong correlation between invasive PVR and Abbas method with r = 0.913. The sensitivity and specificity PVR echocardiography respectively 100 % and 31.5% in measuring PVR < 3 WU. Conclusion: PVR echocardiography with Abbas method is useful for screening patients adult ASD with PVR < 3 WU and no need for further catheterization.
