Description
Summary:Nilam is one of the plant producing essential oils, on international markets nilam oil is known as Patchouli oil. The result of Patchouli plant is the oil obtained by distilling its stem and leaves, patchouli oil is used as a binding material on perfume fragrance, cosmetics, pharmaceutical industry. The province of Aceh is Indonesia's patchouli oil-producing region and the patchouli oil is a local pre-eminent product and non oil and gas export commodities, but the patchouli refining business is still done traditionally and consideres as small rural industry. Therefore, in order to improve the yield and quality of patchouli oil, it is necessary doing research on patchouli refining with the right method. The purpose of this research is to study optimum conditions of refining in term of the method, time and capacity, as well as the feasibility of refining efforts of patchouli oil. The Patchouli used is acehnese patchouli. The refining is carried out by two methods, namely steamed (water and steam distillation) and stew (water distillation). Refining time is 8 hours and at each hour the refining results is measured to know the optimum time and results of refining. The capacities used are 3, 4 and 5 kg. After distillation process, the quality test of patchouli oil produced is held in accordance with the procedure of Indonesian National Standard. The results obtained in the distillation test shows that the optimum point of patchouli oil produced is the distillation using steamed system with a capacity of 4 kg. The resulting oil yield is 2.03% and optimum time on refining both steamed and boiled patchouli is at 6th hour due the oil produced at the 7th and 8th hour are not proportional to the amount of fuel used. The economic analysis that has been done shows R/C Ratio obtained was 1.8, it has indicated the patchouli refining industry is eligible to run.
