ETD Electronic equipment that is used as a means of telecommunication using power supply from the distribution network being susceptible to interference from lightning impuls voltage that is induced on the distribution networks, requiries lightning protection equipment such as arrester. This research purposes to determine the effect of the arrester location on telephone protection from lightning strikes and the relationship between leakage of current arrester for a given working voltage. Both arresters are still in new condition or after being hit by lightning surge that purposed to protect telephone and Internet cable modem network from induced voltage caused by lightning strikes can be achieved. The research was conducted using five test conditions. Measuring leakage current of the arrester before hitted by impulse voltage is to know that the arrester is in good condition or not . The second test, RJ - 11 arrester were given impulse voltage of 697 volts with a distance to the arrester being varied. The third test, the arrester distance was varied with length between phone and impulse voltage being 10 meters. The fourth test was similar with the third test , the difference is the cable used on the input and the output side of arrester having a different resistance value. In the last test, repeatability test performed on the arrester leakage current to determine whether there is a change on arrester leakage current characteristics after exposure to impulse . In the end, the data and analysis from all of the test are found that there is no leakage current at arrester RJ-11, both in new condition or after given impulse. The results showed that the distance of the arrester, the voltage perceived equipment will increase directly proportional with distance between arrester and equipment. Still able to cut the impulse voltage arrester on safe limits for the phone. The size of cable used also affects the perceived large voltage equipment because of different barriers on each cable.
