Summary: | Syria has a strategy in dealing with Israel through direct war with Israel in
1948, 1967 and 1973. Syria also executes its strategy in dealing with confrontation
with the Israel on Lebanon war indirectly. Additionally Syria also tried to negotiate
peace with Israel in an effort to deal with the conflict with Israel in order to regain the
Golan Heights territory. Syrian strategy in the face of conflict with Israel in 1991-
2013 studied in the two periods aiming to explain the phenomenon of the term of
President Hafiz al - Assad and future of President Bashar al - Assad to the impact of
these strategies in the unrest in Syria through relevant secondary sources. The
problem to be addressed related to the Syrian strategy in the Middle East including to
defend, implementation of comprehensive balance strategy including negotiation
strategy with Israel, US insistence to Syrian strategy in supporting the insurgents due
to Israels interests that want to destroy the power of Hezbollah and Hamas resistance
group and the impact of Syrian strategy in dealing with Syria unrest that are
happening in Syria.
A Framework in this dissertation is viewed from a geopolitical angle of Syria
in determining its policy based on geographic factors that can determine a strategy for
dealing with Israel. Geopolitical factors associated with the realist approach explain
that a country will increase its military strength, neutral or make alliance for its
security interest. A Change of international system from bipolar to unipolar influence
Syrian strategy in dealing with Israel. A realist approach assumes that the
international system is anarchy so Syria strategy seeks to increase the military
strength and support to the resistance group to confront Israel.
Under President Hafiz al - Assad and then President Bashar al - Assad, Syria
is consistent in carrying out its strategy against Israel by providing support to
Palestinian resistance groups and Hezbollah. It causes that the Syrian strategy made a
stronger threat to Israel. The strength of this threat makes Israel used U.S. policy to
insist Syria and then it has a significant impact on unrest in Syria which aims to
replace the regime of Bashar al- Assad. Israels expected regime change will
eliminate the power of Iran, and Syria especially in assisting Palestinian and
Hizbullah resistance. |
