In particular, it aims to identify and classify the modal auxiliary verbs according to the 3 family of meanings, epistemic, deontic, and dynamic. The classifications adopt Huddleston and Pullum�s theory. This research use Collins� classifications of modal auxiliary verbs relate to the modality. In addition, it also attempts to examine the functions of the modal auxiliary verbs. The modal auxiliary verbs are analyzed using 3 steps of discourse analysis, description, interpretation, and explanation. The results show that modal auxiliary verbs in Martin Luther King, Jr.�s speech I Have a Dream are used to express epistemic meanings. This seems to suggest that Martin Luther King, Jr. expresses his prediction and volition. Furthermore, through the use of the modal auxiliary verbs, he wants to encourage the Black American people to efforts their freedom with the dreams of better future.
