Summary:This manuscript describes the transformation of the economy in Kayu Ara after palm oil entered this area in 1997. Beside that, this manuscript is to describe the economic life of the family in Kayu Ara after the new commodity (palm oil). The location of the research is in Kayu Ara Hamlet, Kuala Buayan Village, Meliau, Sanggau, in Province West Kalimantan. This research has been done in two months (1st month on July 2011 and the 2nd time on July 2013). Informants of this research are the families that lives in Kayu Ara consist of rubber farmers, seller, palm oil worker, and also palm oil farmer. The methods of this research are interview method and participation observation research. This thesis is discussed about the respond of the families to the new opportunities that appear because of the palm oil and become a new important commodity in agriculture in this area. Kayu Ara enjoyed the transformation of this commodity. The modernization in Kayu Ara marked with the agriculture equipment development in people and the opportunities that become more open in Kayu Ara make a lot of change in people. This matter make a lot of respond appear in their own family. Of course the respond of every individual were different. In Kayu Ara case, there are a lot of families that give a respond by working in palm oil sector. There are also some people that still loyal to the old commodity like rubber and there are also some people that give a respond by opening a stall to fulfill their daily needs. This all are the form of the reactions from every family to the economic transformation in Kayu Ara.
