Summary: | This study aims to describe the development of sandiwara (theatrical art) in
Indramayu after the national tragedy of 1965. This performing art is very famous
in this region , especially before suffering a setback in the early 2000s. This kind
of performing art is also famous in the entire region of West Java and part of
Central Java, but also outside Java. Even so, not many people care about its
history.
As a matter of fact, the local government of Indramayu pays less attention
on arts, including on sandiwara. Albeit the fact, that it plays prominent role in
preserving local history of West Java, particularly the history of Indramayu. There
is no local oral tradition that was preserved by generations, corcerning sandiwara
which creates a vurnerability of its existence in the future.
As time goes by, mostly the early playwright have passed away and young
generation start to take over their role. This is the most important reason to study
the history of birth and development of sandiwara. Although it is difficult to
explore the early origin of sandiwara, but at least some explanation of its
development can be portrayed. This effort is intended to be no more history is
dissappear with time.
This research uses historical method. It uses primary and secondary
sources. The primary source are oral sources and local government archives, while
secondary sources are journals, articles, literature books, and the internet.
The findings in this study indicate that sandiwara is one of cultural identity
of Indramayu. It has significant roles in the development of people in this region
and elsewhere. It also funtions as medium for socializing government programs in
the New Order. |
