Summary: | Life expectancy rate of elderly is high in Indonesia. Along with the
increase of life expectancy rate in elderly, so an optimal oral and dental care
management should be improved including the tongue. This study aims to assess
the needs of dental hygiene intervention, regarding the tongue status of elderly in
Posyandu Sanggrahan, Mlati Sleman Yogyakarta.
This was an observational descriptive study with a cross sectional
approach. Subjects were 41 elderlies in Posyandu Sanggrahan which consist of 12
males and 29 females. The subjects had to be minimal of 55 years old. Sample
collection using consecutive sampling technique. Assessment of tongue status
used Brief Oral Health Status Examination (BOHSE) by Kayser-Jones. A score of
0 showed an normal tongue. A score of 1 showed the tongue undergoes changes
in which appear sleek, fissured, and partially in redness-colour. So it needs dental
hygiene intervention. A score of 2 showed an unhealthy tongue which appear
sleek, redness with red or white patches and the presence of an ulcer for 2 weeks,
so it needs referral to a dentist.
The result of this study showed that 30 of 41 subjects (73,2%) had tongue
that undergoes changes, 10 of 41 (24,4%) had unhealthy tongue, and 1 of 41
subjects (2,4%) had normal tongue.
Based on this study, it can be concluded that almost of elderlies in
Posyandu Sanggrahan need dental hygiene intervention either promotive or
preventive to maintain a good healthy tongue. |
