Description
Summary:Gingivitis is a gingival inflammation without any of gingival attachment loss in teeth. Gingivitis is caused by a huge quantity of plaque accumulation in an interdental area that spread around tooth cervical. Category of mild gingivitis is characterized by a redness gingival color, edema, and shiny along with bleeding while probing. Gingivitis can be reduced with plaque control using mouthwash. Aloe vera is known for having antibacterial and antiinflamation activities. The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of gargling with 5% concentration of aloe vera extract (Aloe barbadensis Mill.) towards gingival status of mild gingivitis patient. Subjects were 30 patients of mild gingivitis category and were divided randomly into 2 groups which were treatment group and control group with 15 subjects each. Treatment group was instructed to gargle with 5% concentration of aloe vera extract while 0,1% hexetidine for control group. Subject gargle medicine according to the group 2 times a day in the morning and night after brushing teeth for 5 days in a row. The initial gingival index measurement was performed before subject was about to gargle while the final gingival index measurement was performed in the morning of day 6 after 5 days of gargling. Data based on gingival index proportion value obtained was analyzed using Mann Whitney test. Result the reasearch showed there was no significant difference between 5% concentration of aloe vera extract compared with control group. This result can be concluded that 5% concentration of aloe vera extract had the same effect with 0,1% hexetidine towards gingival health status of mild gingivitis patient.
