Description
Summary:Fear and anxiety about dental treatment are common problem experienced by many patients and could be a barrier in treatment. Anxiety that arises when treatment could increase sympathetic activity, and in some patients may culminate in medical emergency. Severe anxiety may progress to somatic reactions, if it affects the circulatory system can enhance heart rate and blood pressure. Uncontrolled high blood pressure especially when undergoing dental treatment, may lead to complications that endanger patients, such heart attack and bleeding problems. This study aims to determine the correlation between dental anxiety on the blood pressure in outpatients of the Prof. Soedomo Dental Hospital. A cross-sectional analytical observations is used in this study. Sampling was conducted with a consecutive sampling method, to obtain 70 respondents in accordance with the calculation of sample size. Dental anxiety level measured by MDAS and blood pressure were measured and categorized into low blood pressure (hypotensive), normal blood pressure (normotens ive), and high blood pressure (hypertensive). The correlation of dental anxiety level on blood pressure is analyzed stastistically through Kendalls Tau test. The result of Kendalls Tau test analysis showed a significance of 0,005 (p<0,05) with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0,334. Based on the result, it can be concluded that the correlations between dental anxiety and blood pressure status in outpatients of Prof. Soedomo Dental Hospital in Yogyakarta is unidirectional, with the higher level of dental anxiety will be followed by an increase in blood pressure status.
