Summary: | The development of Bekasi linked directly with the growth and expansion of Jakarta. Bekasi
region in colonial times was only a Kawedanan or district that almost half its area was
particulaire (private land). Unlike Jakarta, which has been projected as a colonial city and
rapidly flourished since the Dutch time. Bekasi emerged after independence and the status
increased to the district level. Significant progress has been noted in Instruksi Presiden No. 13
Tahun 1976 on the extention of the greater JABOTABEK area development that aims to relieve
the population explosion and to create an equitable distribution of development to the hinterland
areas .
Due to the conception, Bekasi designated to bear the burden of urban development as a buffer
city. The impact is quite noticeable in the sense of the industrial expansion. Residential facilities
and amenities are growing up due to the many developers who are interested in investments. As
well as rapid population growth occurred during the years 1970 to 1990 to make compliance
with increasing residential development, infrastructure facilities were built to support the
activities of its residents. This development changed Bekasi not only physically but also socialy
and economically. In which the main feature of this development was the shift from agricultural
area to urban site. On the basis of that response, the Subdistrict of Bekasi in particular was
changed to Administrative City of Bekasi in 1982. Ongoing development of Bekasi significantly
coincided with developments in the city of Jakarta as a strategic area and a buffer city . |
