Description
Summary:Background : Diabetes Mellitus is one of the most common chronic disease and is the seventh highest cause of death in the world. Diabetes Mellitus is also responsible for huge number of blindness, amputation, and kidney failure cases all over the world. Diabetes Mellitus is very closely related to disturbances of glucose and lipid metabolism which manifest as hyperglycemia and hypercholesterolemia. Extract of Swietenia macrophylla King seeds is reported to have hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effect, thus has high potential to be developed as alternative for treatment of Diabetes Mellitus. However, the knowledge of which substrate(s) is/are specifically responsible for the therapeutic effect is far from adequate and still requires further studies. Objective : To find out the effect of flavonoid from Swietenia macrophylla King seeds towards the level of blood glucose and total cholesterol of streptozotocinnicotinamide induced rats (Rattus norvegicus). Method : Quasi experimental study with pre-test and posttest design. The studied subjects are thirty six 8 10 weeks old male rats (Rattus norvegicus) which weigh around 170-270 gram. Results : Administration of 10 mg/200 grBW/day, 20 mg/200 grBW/day, and 40 mg/200 grBW/day of flavonoid for 28 days significantly lower the fasting blood glucose level of the subjects. There are no significant changes of fasting total cholesterol level of the subjects after the administration of 10 mg/200 grBW/day, 20 mg/200 grBW/day, and 40 mg/200 grBW/day of flavonoid for 28 days. Conculsion : Administration of 10 mg/200 grBW/day, 20 mg/200 grBW/day, and 40 mg/200 grBW/day of flavonoid from the extract of Swietenia macrophylla King seeds show significant hypoglycemic effect.
