Abdul Ghofir, Sp.S (K) ETD Background: The mini-mental state exam (MMSE) has been used to evaluate the cognitive function of patients. However, many things can affect a patient's MMSE score such as their age, education level and current neurological disorder. It is therefore important to know whether the MMSE scores of stroke patients in stroke unit is different from the general population. Objective: To determine the distribution of MMSE scores of patients in Unit Stroke RSUP Sardjito, Yogyakarta. Method: A descriptive study, cross sectional study using descriptive statistics to determine the MMSE score of patients in Unit Stroke RSUP Sardjito taken from secondary data, Case Report Form (CRF). Result: MMSE scores decrease with increasing age, from median MMSE score of 28 in patients aged less 40 years to 15 in patients aged 80 years and above. MMSE scores also slightly decrease in stroke patients with diabetes (from a mean MMSE score of 24.39 to 22.82), hypertension (from 24.71 to 24.08) and stroke patient with hypercholesterolemia shows an increase (from 23.86 to 25.73). Conclusion: MMSE scores vary within stroke patients of Unit Stroke RSUP Sardjito by age, presence of hypertension, diabetes, and hypercholesterolemia, which are consistent with results obtained from previous studies.
