THE DIFFERENCE OF ATRIAL DIAMETERS IN ATRIAL SPETAL DEFECT (ASD) PATIENTS WITH SEVERE PULMONARY HYPERTENSION AS COMPARED TO NON-SEVERE PULMONARY HYPERTENSION

Background: Atrial septal defect (ASD) as the most common congenital heart defect presented in adulthood is often complicated by presence of pulmonary hypertension (PH). Enlargement of atrial diameters are consequence of this defect. Hence, a research has to be done to determine whether there is any...

Enlargement of atrial diameters are consequence of this defect. Hence, a research has to be done to determine whether there is any relation between atrial enlargement and severity of PH. Objectives: The objective of this study is to determine the quantitative differences of both right and left atrial diameters in ASD patients with severe PH compared to non-severe PH. Method: This was a retrospective study using the data from atrial septal defect registry. The survey was conducted in Department of Cardiology and Vascular Medicine FM UGM and Dr. Sardjito Hospital, Yogyakarta. The data analysis was done in January 2014 using independent t-test and multiple regression method through IBM SPSS 20. Result: The difference of right atrial diameter in relation to severity of PH shows significance with p=0.024. On the other hand, as for left atrial diameter, p=0.413 and it is not significant. Multiple regression analysis shows that the defect diameter has significant influence too on the size of right atrial diameter. Conclusion: On the basis of the result obtained in this study, it may be concluded that only right atrial diameter is affected by severity of PH and not the left atrial diameter.
