Summary: | Leaf of Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L.) is traditionally used for relieving
cough, asthma disorders, and bronchitis. In order to improve the aesthetics and
acceptability, the extract should be formulated in syrup dosage form. Consider
that the extract has a bitter taste and is poorly soluble in water, the composition of
sweeteners, thickeners , stabilizers , and kosolven should be optimized. This study
was aimed to optimize the syrup dosage form formula of Hibiscus leaf extract
(Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L.)based on physical properties using the Simplex Lattice
Design.
Dry pulverized samples was delipidated by using petroleum ether. The
residue was macerated by using 70% ethanol and then evaporated. Syrup were
made in 7 different formulas and were checked for the physical properties,
including viscosity, pour ability, acidity, and taste response. The data was
evaluated with Design Expert ® software to determine the optimum formula. One
sample t-test was conducted to determine the differences between the predictions
of the physical properties of the optimum formula with the experimental results.
Mucolytic effect of the optimum formula was tested in vitro. Stability of the
optimum was evaluated through weekly comparison of physical properties,
starting at day 0 and ended after 1 month of storage.
Optimum formula was determined in a proportion of 16.85% glycerin |
