THE CORRELATION BETWEEN MEAN PULMONARY ARTERIAL PRESSURE AND HEMOGLOBIN LEVEL IN PATIENTS WITH ATRIAL SEPTAL DEFECT

Background: Atrial septal defect (ASD) is the most common congenital heart disease diagnosed in adulthood. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is one of the associated complications of ASD. Increase in pulmonary arterial pressure causes the oxygen saturation decreases. A compensatory erythrocytosis happens....

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is one of the associated complications of ASD. Increase in pulmonary arterial pressure causes the oxygen saturation decreases. A compensatory erythrocytosis happens. Thus, a study needs to be done to determine the correlation between mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP) and hemoglobin (Hb) level in patients with atrial septal defect. Objectives: The objective of this study is to determine the correlation between mPAP and Hb level in patients with ASD. Method: This study is a retrospective cross-sectional study using the data derived from ASD registry. The survey was conducted in Department of Cardiology and Vascular Medicine FM UGM and RSUP Dr. Sardjito, Yogyakarta. The analysis was done in December 2013 using IBM SPSS 20. Result: There is a very weak positive correlation between mPAP and Hb level in patients with ASD (r=0,013, p=0,936). However there is a moderately positive correlation between the same variables in ASD patients with severe PH which however is not statistically significant (r=0,546, p=0.082). Conclusion: The result obtained from this study shows a very weak positive correlation between the mPAP and Hb level in patients with ASD.
