THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN REFLUX SEVERITY INDEX (RSI) SCORE AND THE SEVERITY OF LARYNGOPHARYNGEAL LESION IN GERD PATIENT

Background: The typical symptoms of GERD are heartburn, epigastric pain and occasionally cough and hoarseness due to regurgitation.GERD can be categorized into extraesophageal reflux disease. One of it is reflux laryngitis or laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPR). LPR is basically because of the re...

One of it is reflux laryngitis or laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPR). LPR is basically because of the reflux of acid or gastric content that reach the upper airway, larynx and pharynx. The symptoms are hoarseness and sore throat. Diagnosis of both GERD and LPR can be done using endoscopy. Due to variation of symptoms, the diagnosis should be supported with a symptoms-based questionnaire such as GERD-Q and Reflux Severity Index(RSI). Objectives: The objective of this research is to test the relationship between Reflux Severity Index (RSI) score and the severity of laryngopharyngeal lesion in GERD patient. Method: The study design of this research is a crosssectional study. In this research, 33 patients who went for endoscopic examination due to symptoms of GERD and/or LPR were interviewed and they filled in the RSI questionnaire. 19 out of 33 patients were excluded and the remaining 14 patients were included in the research. The RSI score of the patients were compared with their Reflux Finding Score (RFS), an instrument to intepret the severity of laryngopharyngeal lesion from endoscopic image. The data was analysed using IBM SPSS 20. Results: The correlation test between both variables was tested using Pearsons correlation test and produced r=0,169 and p=0,563. Both variables showed very weak positive correlation, however, the value of p is more than 0,05, the result is not statistically significant. Conclusion: There is no relationship between RSI score and severity of laryngopharyngeal lesion in GERD patient.
