| Summary: | The aims of this research are to: 1) to study what kind of the structures of
direct suggestions and indirect suggestions are used in the editorial of The Jakarta
Postand2) to study suggestions based on their structures and directness are mostly
used in the editorial of The Jakarta Post. This study was conducted on the
editorial of The Jakarta Post newspaper published during March 2013 (28
editorials). The theory used in this study is pragmatic theory, especially theory
about speech act, illocution and related theory with act of suggesting from the
previous research by the experts. This research uses quantitative analysis with
tables to present the data.
The investigation found that in the category of direct suggestion, there are
three forms used by the editor: Modals with you, Pseudo cleft structure and
Imperative, with Modals with you as the most dominant to use. On the other hand,
in the category of indirect suggestion, the editor uses two kinds of structures.
Those are Modals with agents other than you and Conditional. The first structure
is the most dominant to use. This research also found that totally, Modals with
agents other than you also became the most dominant structure to use in the
editorial of The Jakarta Post newspaper, while Imperative and Pseudo cleft
structure are the least |
