Sani Roychansyah, ST., M.Eng., D.Eng. ETD Regeneration is one of a city's recovery strategy in addressing changes in the structure of the city. Urban regeneration is chosen as a strategic effort to rejuvenate the center of the city that are physically unattractive. Bilbao is a city that once had experienced the positive impact of industrialization and reached its peak in the 1970s. During this period Bilbao experienced growth and development in physical, economic, and social aspects. However, this situation can not last long because of the crisis that hit the city. Industrial activity closed down and as a result, the city began to decline causing various problems. Therefore the idea of urban regeneration was chosen as the recovery strategy for it to become a vibrant and sustainable city. The purpose of this study is to describe the concept of regeneration in the city of Bilbao. The method used is the deductive qualitative rationalistic method with an analytical approach to assessment through a collection of objects based on the theory contained in the associated textual literature. The results showed that the regeneration carried out in the city of Bilbao became the best recovery solution. The regeneration strategy also managed to recover the state of the city, not only able to transform the negative image of the city but also managing to make Bilbao known internationally. Moreover Bilbao also managed to diversify the economic base from the industrial sector to the service sector. The most important of this diversification is the strong interventions that were implemented in the space of physical regeneration projects on a large scale. Now the success of Bilbao gives examples of successful models of urban transformation for many cities around the world.
