Summary:Esterification reaction of Castor oil (Ricinus communis) with ethanol and Pt/zeolite catalyst have been investigated. The objective of this study was to learn the effect and activity of Pt/zeolit catalyst for esterification reaction of castor oil. The first step pf the reaction was activation of Pt/zeolite catalyst by calcination then followed by esterification reaction. Esterification reaction was done by reacting castor oil and ethanol with Pt/zeolite catalyst in temperature 76°C for 6 hours. This reaction has been done by reflux process with castor oil : ethanol mol ratio = 1:12. Esters obtained from this reaction consists of glycerol and any other particulate matters which need to be separated by liquid-liquid extractions using warm aquadest (T=50°C). The second process was transesterification reaction using NaOH catalyst by reflux process in temperature 76°C for 2 hours. The usage of any different kinds of catalyst for this reaction Pt/zeolite, H-zeolite, H2SO4 and NaOH showed most yield 95,457 % obtained from NaOH catalyst and the fewest 82,706 % obtained from H-zeolites catalyst.
