Marriage is one part of the culture which cannot be dispersed from human�s life, and matrimony is first step to build a family. Every region has different culture especially marriage. One of that region which has uniqueness and interesting is Nias marriage, and the most unique in Nias marriage is dowry (bӧwӧ). Niasese recognize dowry as bӧwӧ. Dowry in Nias marriage is crucial and must be fulfilled by someone who wants to marry a Niasese woman. This paper aims to explain about Niasese marriage in general and describe the phases of marriage in Nias. Then, it will discuss about the specific part of Nias marriage especially dowry (bӧwӧ). Specifically, it will explain about the history and development of bӧwӧ, items of bӧwӧ, people who receive the bӧwӧ (the bride�s side), and people who responsible to pay the bӧwӧ (the groom�s side) in Nias marriage. To collect data and information, the writer uses three methods that include library study, direct interview, and internet exploration. In library study, the writer reads several books. Then, direct interview is conducted with the chiefs of Nias ethnic to give the information about Nias marriage, and in this part the writer transcribes the interview in Nias language, which was then translated into English. The last is internet exploration which is done to get articles, journals, and photos, those are related to this research. In conclusion, dowries (bӧwӧ) in Nias marriage is very complicated and makes Niasese�s life miserable because the bӧwӧ is very huge and there are so many regulations that must be done by someone who wants to marry a Niasese woman. However, bӧwӧ in Nias marriage has changed especially in the amount of bӧwӧ itself. Although the amount of bӧwӧ has changed, all items of bӧwӧ must be prepared by everyone who wants to marry a Niasese woman. Nowadays, bӧwӧ is determined based on the occupation of the brides and also the groom�s family occupation.
