| Summary: | This research is a descriptive qualitative research which investigated
compliments and responds to compliment in Indonesian. This research is aimed to
describe language politeness strategy realization of compliments as well as the
responds and to describe social variables that influence the utterances selection of
complimenting and how to respond on it in Indonesian.
In this research, the data was collected by observing and taking notes on
compliments and responds to compliment between speaker and hearer in natural
situation especially in movies and reality shows. Afterward, the data was grouped
into two corpus data: corpus data of compliments utterances and corpus data of
responds to compliment utterances. These compliments and responds to
compliment utterances were analyzed into three parts: type of sentence, strategy
and interpretation of language politeness strategy in complimenting and
responding to compliment. Selection of compliments and the responds utterances
form was analyzed using SPEAKING theory.
Compliments and responds to compliment in Indonesian are in form of
declarative, interogative, imperative and exclamative sentences. As the study has
shown, compliments strategies are compliment preceded by interjection,
compliment preceded by praises to God, compliment with questions, compliment
with comparison, compliment with apreciation, compliment with credit to hearer,
compliment with metaphor, compliment with jokes. Indonesian people respond to
compliment by using strategies such as refusing, redirecting, asking, interpreting it
as mock, interpreting it as request, turning it back to the hearer, accepting, joking,
thanking, and combination. The compliment responses among college students
and in television entertainment have shown the symptoms of difference in
accepting the compliment responses and showing appreciation. |
