Description
Summary:Work performance is essential in an industry because it affects the product quality. Work performance itself can be affected by various factors. In this research, what we want to know is the effect of smoking habit and workload variations on blood pressure, heart rate, lung volume, reaction time, and short term memory ability. The sample used in this study consisted of 15 men by the age of 21 years 9 months + 8 months which represents the largest proportion of productive-aged male population in Indonesia. All respondents were divided into three groups: moderate smokers, light smokers, and non-smokers. This classification is intended to find out if the smoking frequency also has any effect in this study. The study lasted for 120 minutes which consists of 5 times the measurement of blood pressure, heart rate, and lung volume measurements as well as 3 times in the reaction time and ability of short-term memory. Workload variation used in two levels. First is moderate workload by walking normally using the treadmill at 4 km/h speed, and a heavy workload by fast walking on the treadmill at 6 km/h speed, respectively 2 times 20 minutes. From this research it is known that for the given workload there is no significant difference in the final measurement results of physiology and cognitive performance among the three groups of subject there. Thus, there is no need to differ smoker and non-smoker worker to work in heavy and moderate workload because their performance in general can be said the same. Moreover, additional smoking break for smokers worker is not required.
