Summary: | Nowadays migration becomes a very big issue, especially for developed
countries. Germany as a developed country that has a very large number of
immigrants, feel the impact of the issue. Many of the problems occurred because of
migration flows in Germany, such as unemployment, crime, and small conflicts
with native German. Problems arising from the German government took a major
step to accommodate the needs of immigrants and for their life survival. The
accommodation is needed to reach the point of integration between immigrants with
native German. To that end, the German government organized a course for
immigrants, the integration courses. This course teaches German language and

what is meant by integration course? How perceptions of immigrants over the
course of the integration? And, what are the benefits of the integration course itself?
Based on the three questions above, I conducted a research about integration
course in Freiburg, Germany. This study was run in order to tandem research
collaboration between Universitas Gadjah Mada and Freiburg Universität. By
involving seven informants, the research was conducted on in-depth interviews and
direct observation in some integration course institution. From interviews and
observations we can see the character of immigrants in Freiburg, and what they
actually need to achieve integration in Germany. German language skill is their
actual needs. With language, the immigrants can meet their needs during their life
in Germany, such as communicating, getting a job and continue their education.
The results showed that, language has power in the integration process.

the immigrants come to know what the terms and obligations as citizens of their
country. Language also changes the lifes dynamics of immigrants, from being
embarrassed or do not dare to communicate with other people, be brave |
