Summary: | Bukit Tigapuluh is one of the most important conservation areas in Sumatra Island and it has strategic function supporting wildlife conservation including one of the Indonesian endemic key species Sumatran Elephant Elephas maximus sumatranus. Forest conversion is the main threat to Bukit Tigapuluh ecosystem. Forest conservation causes habitat fragmentation and resulting three habitats in different conditions respectively. Forest conversion also disturbs ecosystem balance which influence to wildlife existence including microorganism and the parasites as well. Research about wild Sumatran Elephant never been reported before. Aims of this study is to understand the difference of gastrointestinal parasites prevalence and intensity and evaluate the elephant age structures. Furthermore this study intends to understand correlation between gastrointestinal parasites intensity and ages of elephants. 134 dung samples diameter have been measured to determine elephants age lases by using the von Bartalanffy Growth Equation. Samples collected from three habitat with different condition. The dungs diameters tested by chi square test. Parasitological examination has been done by flotation, sedimentation and McMaster method. Parasites prevalence and intensity tested by chi square test and the correlation between parasites intensity and ages tested by Spearmans Range Test. Results of this study are identified egg of Strongyloides sp., strongyle, and Fasciola sp. Strongyloides sp. has the highest prevalence (48%), Fasciola sp. has intermediate prevalence (17%) and strongyle has the lowest prevalence (9%). Parasites prevalence in PT. TMA is the highest, prevalence in PT. LAJ block 4 Muara Sekalo Village is in intermediate level and prevalence in ex-PT. DHE is the lowest. Elephant population is dominated by subadult and adult is in intermediate level and juvenile in in the lowest level. There is no correlation between elephants ages and intensity of parasites. |
