This research focused on profiling Daeng Soetigna and the
improvement of angklung. Technical playing methods. The research
method itself is qualitative one with a multi-disciplined approach
namely musicology. The shift from pentatonic to diatonic musical
scale of anklung playing had been initiated by Daeng Soetigna in
1938. In its own part, besides of its rules in musical performances
home and abroad, angklung develops into a kind of cultural
tourism, even it takes part in the curriculum of our national
education.
Previously, before its turning into diatonic scale Angklung
functioned at rituals in West Java society, specifically when
harvesting paddy, on religious occasions, and even it played an
important role as one of the instruments in musical corps of
Pajajaran Kingdom which exist to early twentieth century. In early
twetieth century, western influences began to penetrate Indonesian
society thanks to the schools organized by the colonial government.
One of the influence was on musical instruments which bore
international musical scale.
The shift from pentatonic to diatonic scale of angklung
playing in early twentieth century was provoked by influences of
western culture, or more specifically by the youth and students who
got the influences of western music from the colonial schools. In
later phase, there was some consciousness of creating national
culture, and national music was one of its concern. From 1922 to
1928, Daeng Soetigna studied at Hollandsch Inlandsche School
where he got Dutch, arithmetic, geography, history, and music.
Next years he became a vocal teacher who was good at playing
guitar, piano, and violin. The idea to change from pentatonic to
diatonic musical scale of angklung playing came in 1938.
