Summary: | The rapid development of technology today has resulted in many old devices are replaced by new devices that are considered to have a better performance level. For example is the change of use of the device router to the multilayer-switch devices in computer networks. Multilayer-switch devices is considered to have a better performance compared with the router. Some educational institutions have started using multilayer-switch devices, One of them is Gadjah Mada University (UGM). This research is focused on the demonstrate the performance of the router and multilayer-switch and compare the performance between the two devices so that it can be seen the advantages of each device.
There are some data references that were used in this research, such as the information about the device and the existing network topology used in JTETI UGM. The allocation addresses on each device on the network is done by using the subnetting method and using the IPv4 address, which will then be simulated in a device simulator Graphical Network Simulator 3 (GNS3). Simulations carried out in order to show the performance of the two devices clearly. There are several parameters used in comparing the performance of these devices, including the amount of time required to perform the packet data exchange in a network using TCP and UDP protocols. And also, comparing the level of reliability of each device to handle the bandwidth settings when used in network.
The results of the research done by looking at the performance of both devices and compare the performance of both, and found that the multilayer-switch device shows better performance than the router, which reached 15% faster than router at the time of TCP delivery and 60% faster when UDP delivery. The results also showed 45% of the total number of packets sent experiencing delays in multilayer switches device and 48% in the router device.
