Summary: | This graduating paper aims to discuss about Lunar New Year (Imlek) as a tradition in
Tionghoa culture. This paper describes about the history, characteristics, and aspects that
associated with Imlek. Moreover, this paper observed a big event of Imlek in Yogyakarta
which was called Cap Go Meh festival 2014. The event was very interesting and attracted
the attention of thousands people. The event also influenced tourism in Yogyakarta since
Yogyakarta is popular as a cultural and tourism city.
I used direct observation and interview methods to gather up all the information about
Lunar New Year (Imlek) and Pekan Budaya Tionghoa Yogyakarta (PBTY) 2014. I also
observed some public places and PBTY 2014 event in Ketandan, Chinatown for a month
from 27 January 21 February 2014 to do the field study. I interviewed a committee of
PBTY 2014 and some visitors of the event about the PBTY 2014 and those who celebrated
Imlek. I also used some few books and articles in the internet for some more references about
Imlek, PBTY 2014, and other additional information about Imlek.
In short, Lunar New year is a hereditary tradition and it has a unique history. Every
aspect and ornament of Imlek has a meaning and purpose. Besides of tradition and culture,
Imlek is associated with the Chineses beliefs. Furthermore, Imlek in Indonesia also has been
acculturated with local culture, and in focus, it has been acculturated with Javanese culture of
Yogyakarta.
