Description
Summary:This research investigates types of cultural terms and the strategies in translating them into Indonesian. The data were taken from the novel entitled The Enchantress: The Secret of The Immortal Nicholas Flamel in English and its translation in Indonesian translated by Berlian M. Nugrahani. There are 138 cultural terms found in the novel. They are classified into 4 categories based on Ke Pings classification. There are 77 (55.8%) techno-echo terms, 21 (15.2%) social terms, 30 (21.7%) ideational terms, and 10 (7.3%) linguistic terms. Thus, techno-echo terms are the most often used in the novel. It is also found that from 15 translation strategies proposed by Fernandez-Guerra, 7 strategies can be used in translating the terms: 75 (54%) terms translated by borrowing, 3 (2%) terms translated by calque, 7 (5%) terms translated by equivalence, 1 (0.7%) term translated by explicitation, 1 (0.7%) term translated by generalization, 35 (25%) terms translated by literal translation and 3 (2%) terms translated by particularization. In the study it is also found that a term can be translated using the combination of two different strategies as the terms contain translatable and untranslatable words. There are 12 (9%) terms translated using this strategy. Some errors related to the incoherency and inaccuracy in translating the terms are also found. Keywords: cultural terms, translation strategies, error in translation
