Description
Summary:Lipstick quality depends on its dye and base, which could be seen from the stability during manufacture, storage, and use. Anthocyanin in hibiscus extract (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L.) has a potential as a substitute of colorant in lipstick. Base carnauba wax and beeswax are commonly use because they could produce lipstick that has a soft texture. This study aims to know the physical characteristics, physical stability, and safety from the optimum formula using the combination of carnauba wax and beeswax as base of lipstick from ethanolic extract of red hibiscus (H. rosa-sinensis). The crown of hibiscus is being extracted using petroleum ether and then ethanol 96%. The optimation is done by Simplex Lattice Design method using 3 formulas which have different base variation in each. After being analyzed by software Design Expert® 9.0.2, physical characteristic, physical stability during 4 weeks of storage, and the qualitative primary irritation of the optimum formula being tested. Verification of physical characteristic is analyzed by one sample t-test and Mann Whitney. Physical stability of the formula is analyzed by one way ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis with 95% confidence level. The optimum formula contains 13,18% carnauba wax and 14,82% beeswax. Lipstick of hibiscus extract (H. rosa-sinensis) is stable in odor, taste, hardness, adhesivity, and melting point but not in color and texture. Hibiscus lipstick is safe for use because it is not irriative.
