Preparation of the composites is as follows, chitosan hydrogels were first mixed with zeolite 200 mesh and Cu(II) solution. The mixed solution was then added into NaOH solution drop-wisely, washed, filtered, and dried. The effects of various zeolite to chitosan ratio was studied against the Cu(II) release behaviour of the composites and was analysed in 0.05 M citric acid solution. The composites were characterized with X-ray diffraction apparatus, FT-IR spectrophotometer, and SEM and its release behaviour. The SEM images show that the morphology of the composites will follow the morphology of the major constituent available in the composite. Composite with a high zeolite ratio were shown to have a rough surface closely similiar with the morphology of zeolite surface due to the aggregation of zeolite in the surface of the composite. By increasing the ratio of chitosan to zeolite, the release rate of Cu(II) from the solution was found to be increased and vise versa.
