Summary: | Sundaris novel is included of one of panglipur wuyung novel. Panglipur wuyung is a
story contains a consolation which has a purpose to entertain a wistful heart. The
Sundari was written by Oskandar R and was published by Rangkah Mas Surabaya in
1966. The novel uses ngoko Javanese as the language used by the characters in the
story.
This story of this book is told that an educated yet poor man who falls in love with a
young rich girl. They went in a relationship, but unfortunately, they had to postpone
their marriage since both of them were still at such young age and also the man
needed to catch his profession title as a teacher in Papua.
The novel was analyzed using Robert Stantons structural analysis including theme,
story facts (character, plot, and setting) and the literary device (title, point of view,
style and tone, symbolism, and irony) and coda. The research underwent several
stages begun with determining the research material, formulating the problems,
finding additional materials to support the analysis, and analyzing the research
problems using the structural analysis to draw final conclusion.
The analysis results showed that the novel has the theme of commitment to love and
postponing marriage for the sake of dream. The protagonists are Sundari and
Pramono, along with the other characters Waluyo, and Mr. and Mrs. Hadiseputro.
The story takes place in Solo in 1966 and goes in forward plot. Regarding the literary
device, the title Sundari refers the name of the protagonist, Sundari. The story was
written in first-person point of view using aku as the narrator. In regards to style
and tone, the novel uses a lot of metaphors, romantic sentences, and some jokes. The
resemblance of the novels characters with those of Javanese puppet stories is the
symbolism found in the novel. Furthermore, the irony is shown by Pramono who has
to go to Papua becoming a teacher, making him live separately from Sundari and
postpone their marriage. Finally, a literary work always tries to convey a message or
coda to the readers about life. This novel tells us that education is primary and there is
no need to rush to the altar when the love is based on a strong commitment. |
