Description
Summary:Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans is one of the bacteria that cause periodontal disease. Chlorine dioxide gel is a powerful antimicrobial. The purpose of this study was to determine the relation between exposure time of chlorine dioxide gel and the inhibition zone of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans bacteria causing periodontal disease. This study was using well diffusion method. MHA (Mueller Hinton Agar) media were smeared with Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans bacteria suspension, then made six holes (diameter 6 mm) were made in plate. Chlorine dioxide gel was dropped in 4 holes (50µl), 2 holes (50µl) dropped with Chlorhexidine digluconate 0,12 % gel and Aquades sterile. The plate were incubated for 48 hours at temperature of 37 o C and the diameter of inhibition zone measured periodically at 12, 18, 24, and 48 hours. Statistical analysis was carried out using a Spearmen correlation test and Bonferroni test. Based on table III, the mean value of the diameter of inhibition zone at 12 hour is 3.57 mm, at 18 hour is 2.71, at 24 hour is 2.30, and at 48 hour is 1.85. This suggests that the longer time of observation, made the smaller of inhibition zone formed. The results of Spearman correlation test was obtained at -0,905 coefficien correlation with p=0,000 (p<0,05) showed a significant association with negative direction, that an increase of time exposure followed by a decrease in bacterial zones inhibition. The results of the analysis with Bonferroni test showed a significant reduction in bacterial zones inhibition at observation time from 12 to 24 hours. Conclusion of this study is that there is a relation between exposure time of chlorine dioxide gel and the inhibition zone of growth of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans bacteria causing periodontal disease.
