Description
Summary:Mefenamic acid is indicated as an anti-inflammatory drug that administered orally in tablet and capsule dosage form. But for some patients with inabilities to swallow, it is inconvenience and give a bitter taste. Mefenamic acid troches is the solution for this problem. This research aims to identified the effect of starch, PGA (Pulvis Gummi Arabica) and sucrose as binding agents on physical properties of mefenamic acid troches. Seven combinations of starch : PGA : sucrose were made, which are FI (100%:0%:0%), FII (0%:100%:0%), FIII (0%:0%):100%, FIV (50%:50%:0%), FV (0%:50%:50%), FVI (50%:0%:50%, and FVII (33,3%:33,3%:33,3%). Wet granulation was method was chosen to produce the troches. The evaluation of physical properties of mefenamic acid troches on this research includes weight uniformity test, hardness test, friability test, late time test, and responsive taste test. The data then analyzed with Simplex Lattice Design method with Design Expert version 7.1.5. The results showed that PGA (Pulvis Gummi Arabica) would increase the hardness of the mefenamic acid troches. The mixing of the three binding agents would decrease the value of the troches friability and give a good taste for the troches and the starch could accelerate the late time of mefenamic acid troches. The combination of starch : PGA (Pulvis Gummi Arabica) : sucrose with the ratio 50% : 50% : 0% were placed in optimum area with the highest desirability value that gave optimum physical properties of mefenamic acid.
