Summary: | Background: One of thecomplications ofspinal anesthesiaisan infectiondue
to contaminationofthe subarachnoidspaceneedleorinjectionfluids,
orfromorganismsthatspreadfromthe skin. The source of infection could derived from
colonization through hematogenous spread or local infection. In Indonesia,, there
were no studies regarding colonization of spinal needle. The purpose of this study
was to determine the incidence of bacterial colonization on the bacterial culture of
the spinal needle after subarachnoid block (SAB) on the provision of 0.5 %
chlorhexidine in 70% alcohol and 10% povidone iodine, as well as the factors that
may influence it.
Methods: The study design was single blind randomized controlled
trial(RCT).Blinding conducted on microbiological officers. The total sample is 164
spinal needles that were divided into two groups: the antiseptic chlorhexidine 0.5 %
in alcohol 70% and 10% povidone iodine antiseptic.
Results: The incidence of bacterial colonization spinal needle group
Povidone iodine 18/82 needles (22.0%), while in the group Chlorhexidene 16/82
needles (19.5%). Incidence of bacterial colonization in the spinal needle in the
Povidone iodine group were more than incidence in Chlorhexidine group, but these
difference of 2.5 % was notsignificant (p > 0.05). Risk factors for incidence of
bacterial colonization of the spinal needle that included age, sex, history of diabetes,
were not significance as well as number of the incidence of irritation and
complications (p > 0.05) in both study groups (Povidone iodine and chlorhexidine).
Conclusion:Effectivity antiseptic chlorhexidine 0.5 % in alcohol 70% is
same as povidone iodine 10% in reducing the level of bacterial
colonization on the culture of spinal needle after subarachnoid block. |
