Summary: | Background: Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is the second most common disease in the
urology clinics in Indonesia after a urinary tract stones. Its prevalence is directly proportional to
age. It is estimated that the number of patients of BPH in the late of 2000s with over 60 years of
age is 5 million/year. Gold Standard of its therapy is surgery with Transurethral Resection of The
Prostate (TURP). Currently 90% of surgery on BPH is conducted with TURP, because morbidity
and mortality are low. Evaluation of therapy, postoperative early complications of TURP
although relatively small is still a problem in urology until now with the factors that influence it
is quite varied.
Objective: To obtain the latest data of the occurrence of early complications in patients of BPH
after TURP, and to understand the prognostic factors are influential.
Subjects: The patients with a diagnosis of BPH which is conducted the operation of TURP in
Dr. Sardjito Central Public Hospital Yogyakarta from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2012,
who met the inclusion criteria.
Method: This study is observational (non-experimental) with cross-sectional analysis in Patients
of BPH who undergo TURP from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2012 in Dr. Sardjito Central
Public Hospital Yogyakarta. The results of this study are conducted using statistical analysis with
Chi-square test with p < 0.05 is considered significant.
Results: From 62 patients the prevalence of early complications, the secondary hematuria is 10
patients (16.1%), the clot retention is 4 patients (6.5%), the acute urinary retention is 4 patients
(6.5%), the TUR syndrome is 1 patient (1.6%), the postoperative UTI is 16 patients (25.8%), the
reoperation is 3 patients (4.8%), and the mortality is 2 patients (3.2%). The correlation of
prognostic factor and early complications with significant p < 0.05 is heart disease with TUR
syndrome (p = 0.001), leukocytes count by postoperative UTI (p = 0.035), leukocytes count by
reoperation (p = 0.001), and leukocytes count by mortality (p = 0.001).
Conclusion: The prognostic factors of occurrence of the early complications in patients of BPH
after TURP are heart disease for TUR syndrome, leukocyte count for the postoperative UTI,
reoperation and mortality.
