Passing sociologically means as presenting oneself as a member of another socialgroup, and generally means as a move from one condition into another condition, a change from one behavior into a new behavior, from one identity into a new identity, and ample types of transition. Passing is used by marginalized people as a technique to gain the privilege and reward from another group. It is also used by oppressed people as a denial of their identity, and then creating a new identity. This research aims to discuss the phenomenon of the Christians and Catholic imitation of Islamic expressions in Banarjoyo village. Imitation is one of the processes of social interaction, and social interaction is a relationship between two or more individuals, which affects an individuals behavior, alter or affect any other individual. The cordial relationship between Muslims and the Christians and Catholic of Banarjoyo village gives a new nuance on the concept of human behavioral change and individual passing, which shows that passing may not only happen on the marginalized and oppressed condition. The significant different number between Muslims and the Christians of Banarjoyo does not buttress them to intertwine a good rapport. Muslim majority in Banarjoyo village treat well the Christians and Catholic minority, and the Christians and Catholic consider their Muslim neighbors as well as their family. Indeed, this close relationship and the dominant Islamic culture in Banarjoyo encourage the writer to examine the concept of passing based on the context of Banarjoyo village. Finally, by using field research, and collecting data through participant observation and in-depth semi structured interview techniques, the study reaches the following conclusion: Christians and Catholic adaptation with Muslims in Banarjoyo village undergirds on three aspects of social interaction, these are parallel, associative, and cooperative. The processes of the Christians social interaction and their participation with Muslims religious activities yield their identification, and imitation of Islamic expressions. The main factor of the Christians and Catholic imitation of Islamic expression is because of their role identity and their feeling dissimilar which further make the Christians and Catholic of Banarjoyo try to assimilate with the dominant Islamic context. This assimilation and the Christians and Catholic adjustment of their behaviors as well as Muslims is what we called as passing as a form of adaptation. [Yogyakarta] : Universitas Gadjah Mada 2014 Thesis NonPeerReviewed , Riza Saputra and , Suhadi, Ph.D. (2014) THE ISLAMIC NUANCE OF THE CHRISTIANS AND CATHOLIC OF BANARJOYO VILLAGE, BATANGHARI SUB DISTRICT, EAST LAMPUNG: PASSING AS A FORM OF ADAPTATION OF THE CHRISTIANS AND CATHOLICS TO THE MUSLIM MAJORITY.
