Description
Summary:Winongo river is a branch of Opak river located in Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, across the administrative area of Sleman, Kota Yogyakarta, and Bantul. Each track of the river contributes to waste production containing various types of organic materials which cause the degradation of the rivers water quality. The aims of this research are: 1) to identify the sources of contamination in Winongo river, 2) to analyze the water quality of Winongo river based on physical, chemical, and biological parameter from the upstream to the downstream, 3) to analyze the pollution load capacity of Winongo river, 4) to analyze the level of riverside community involvement in improving contamination load capacity, and 5) to arrange the appropriate strategies to manage Winongo river. This research used purposive method for water sampling and respondents determining, in-depth interview method for government institution and the riverside community, and observation. Furthermore, the data analysis uses quantitiative method and descriptive qualitative method to analyze the streamflow, water quality, pollution load capacity, and the level of community involvement. The results show that 1) the sources of pollution are from farming, stockbreeding, industry, households, and services activities, 2) the physical parameter of water quality has exceeded the water quality standards grade II on the second spot namely TSS, meanwhile the chemical parameter which exceeds the water quality standards grade II in all spots is phosphat and in some spots is nitrate, 3) the parameter which exceeds the pollution load capacity on the upstream is TSS, on the middle part is nitrate, and on all parts of the river is phosphat, 4) the level of community involvement in improving pollution load capacity is indicated medium in all river parts (upstream, middle, downstream), 5) the management strategies of Winongo watershed include economic empowerment, empowerment of stakeholders, protection of natural resources, and the empowering of the institutional environment.
