Summary: | Province of North Sumatra has a growth rate above the national economic
growth period from 2005 to 2012. However, if viewed from the level of poverty,
there are still many districts/cities that have poverty rates above the provincial
rate, especially the East Coast region. Even based on GDP per capita, each
district/city has experienced a level of relative income inequality.
This study was conducted in 33 districts/cities in the province of North
Sumatra 2005-2012 period. This study aims to identify the districts/cities that
become growth poles and see if there is a spatial concentration of growth using
Klassen typology and spatial autocorrelation. As a growth poles, a district/city
should be able to give spillover effect to neighboring regions, it can be known
through calculation formula spillover effect proposed by Capello (2008). The
other purpose of the study is to analyze the inequality in the province of North
Sumatra receipts panel data regression using the Williamson index as the
independent variable and the dependent variable is the natural resources,
agglomeration, investment as well as a dummy of growth poles.
The results showed that the growth poles in province of North Sumatra is
the city of Medan. In addition there is also a high concentration of growth around
the East Coast region and the concentration of low economic growth around the
West Coast region. Medan as growth poles is also able to provide spillover effect
to local Deli Serdang as neighboring regions. While the regression results indicate
that the agglomeration variables, investment and growth poles dummy
significantly affect inequality.
