Summary:This research was conducted in Merapi volcano touristic area, which is coincided as Merapi disaster-prone area. The potency of Merapi volcano as tourist attraction is inseparable from its inherited eruption risks. Moreover, various eruption cycle owns its characteristics, each of which is with its different span. Indeed, the eruption impacts and time period indifferences are necessarily to be well investigated since the tourists - mainly the foreign tourists and the adventurer or tourist with particular interest - who eagerly like to witness the in time eruption occurrence. This research particularly conducted at the southern part of Merapi volcano Disaster Prone Areas in the regency of Sleman and was applied according to the volcanic activity phases in normal levels. It aims to describe potential points that will be developed as a touristic place in Merapi volcanic eruption prone areas and to examine the spatial pattern of tourism development strategies which suit to Merapi volcano - that has been acknowledged to be an active volcano with high level of disaster threat impacts to its surrounding area. This research as well as limited to variables derived as indicators in the study. The data was derived through written method with open questions questionnaire, oral or interview methods. The carried questions have however previously arrange according to the research problems and then supported with secondary data acquired through documentation. The study used a descriptive approach namely as qualitative research, that strictly applied to determine the investigated circumstances only. The data collection was acquired due to purposive sampling technique in 33 (thirty three) locations which includes : 4 (four) categories of nature , 22 (twenty two) cultural tourism , and 7 (seven) categories of special tours. Data were analyzed qualitatively in order to examine the appropriate adaptation pattern for the tourism development in Merapi volcano disaster-prone areas. Furthermore, the carried analysis were namely as: 1) Distribution of ODTW together with infrastructure, 2) Distribution of ODTW Evacuation Along the Way , 3) Tour Zone due to location and ODTW types, 4) Tour Zone due ODTW Themes/Characteristics, 5) Travel Zone Based On PVMBG KRB Recommendations, and 6) Joint Travel Zone Based On Attraction by Location Proximity, Characteristics / themes, the KRB type and Recommendation from PVMBG. Results of these analyses are the distribution of ODTW Merapi in Central Southern Section (District Turi , Pakem and Cangkringan ) with its hub, entry points, and the direction of tourist destination. This research conclude that Merapi eruption occurance is potentialy to be developed as touristic area in order to re-energize the economic wheel of the local community. The community has becoming used to and aware to Merapi volcano disaster by adapting various things such as : control of the affected land use , preservation for the impacted artifacts as a learning tool , take advantage of turning rainy and dry seasons to, minimize the danger of dangers for primary and secondary disaster tourism activities, the determination of the themes for the development , tourism zone grouping and connecting the dots , the determination of the tourist route is expected to facilitate the distribution of data collection - tourist - coordination offers tour packages in potential tourist sites - introducing some locations that are not well understood by tourists.
