ProstagandinE2 is a vasodilatator and a cofactor, involved in the increased vascular permeability occuring at sites of inflammation, and mediator of bone demineralization. Kaempferia glanga L. is one of medical plants which is believed having potency as an immunomodulator agent. The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of Kaempferia galanga L. essential oil as an antiinflammatory agent, by evaluating its effect on PGE2 produced by A. actinomycetemcomitans stimulated mouse macrophage cells in vitro. Mouse peritoneal macrophages were incubated with 5%, 10%, and 20% of Kaempferia galanga's essential oil at 37oC in an atmosphere containing 5% CO2. After 15 minutes, A. actinomycetemcomitans was added to the suspension and incubated for 30 minutes. THe concentrations of PGE2 supernatant were determined using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. ANOVA showed that production of PGE2 by mouse macrophages in response to the A. actinomycetemcomitans was significantly decreased (p<0.05) upon treatment with Kaempferia galanga L. essential oil, in dose-dependent manner.
