Description
Summary:The aim of present study was to know the critical period of sweet corn (Zea mays saccharata) to weed competition. The study was carried out in KP-4 Kalitirto from July to October 2000 on regosol, having an altitude of 108 m above sea level. It was a single factor experiment evaluating 12 treatments, with varying continuously weedy and weed free period arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three blocks as replications. Statistical analysis was done following nonparametric test of William (1972). The results indicated that the critical period of sweet corn (Zea mays saccharata) to weed competition was 21 28 days after planting, Oldenlandia dicotoma (L), Amaranthus spinosus (L) and the dominant weeds Portulaca oleraceae (L). However, the dominant weeds and the number of weed species had changed because of environment change prior to and after experiment. Competition of weeds at critical period decreased sweet corn plant height, net assimilation rate, crop growth rate, leaf area index, ear length, diametre and weight as well as ear number per plant and per hectar.
