Description
Summary:Abstrak Color was the main parameter which determine consumer preference in selecting products. The dark color found in sorbitol-polyesters was the problem need to be solved and one of the possible solution was bleaching. The objective of this study was to determine the best type of bleaching agent and the optimum condition of bleaching process for sorbitol-polyester. This study comprised of three steps and the first step was the preparation FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Ester) from PFAD (Palm Fatty Acid Distillate) followed by sorbitol-polyester production. The second step was to select the most appropriate bleaching agents among activated carbon, activated zeolit, and activated bentonite and to determine the optimum condition with regard to temperature, length of time, and concentration of bleaching agent. Response Surface Methodology was employed for the optimization and applied on data of absorbance reading at die wavelength 430 ran on spectrophotometer. The third step was to analyze properties and quality of the product. Results showed that the best type of bleaching agent in this study was activated bentonite. The optimum condition of bleaching process with regard to temperature, length of time, concentration and absorbance value of its product for sorbitol-polyester was 116.93°C, 3 hours, 11.22% and 0.225, respectively. As reference, the absorbance of commer, cial palm oil was 0.040. There was no significant effect of bleaching treatment on several properties such as hydroxyl value, structure (as confirmed by TLC), composition of fatty acid, degree of digestibility, as well as melting point. Although bleaching treatment tended to decreas the peroxide value but it seemed to increas the anisidine value.
