Description
Summary:ABSTRAC Sedhekah Bumi is a form of tradition in Java culture that is performed for the sake of soil fertility and protector (dhanyang) of the village. The thesis entitled "The Reconstruction of Sedhekah Bumi Ritual in Nglambangan Village, Wungu Sub-district, Madiun Regency" recognizes Nyai Lambang Sari as the dhanyang of the village. Local people believe that she is the village founder. The research is conducted twice in Nglambangan village, namely in 2004 and 2005. The informants consisted of main informants village head and seniors, and supporting informants who are religious figures, government officers, and ritual performers. Data collecting technique uses two methods: direct recoding for written data and participatory observation for people's activities. Data of oral information were obtained by means of interview. All data were analysed according to the research problem based on the theories and literatures relevant with this study. The study reveals that Sedhekah Bumi ritual in Nglambangan village can be regarded as an act or event of reconstruction of the past ritual tradition to be adjusted with the present social, economic, and political context. This reconstruction event involved many agents carrying their own motivation and orientation. The presence of these agents together with their motivations determined the ritual form and process. Consequently, the meaning of Sedhekah Bumi ritual for the participants is not a single meaning but multiple. The meanings are present in the form of practice of the involvement of the agents and their spiritual, economic, and political orientations. In the practice, the three orientations are interrelated in a social event of celebration, an event when various differences are united and valued according to the local standard called 'rep' .
