The essential oil of rhizome of Curcuma heyneana was obtained by water and steam distillation. It was found that the essential oil contained alpha-pinene, camphene, beta-pinene, 1,8-cineole, camphor, iso-borneol, borneol, beta-gurjunene, caryophyllene, delta-cadinene, elemol and germacrone. Description
Summary:The essential oil of rhizome of Curcuma heyneana was obtained by water and steam distillation. It was found that the essential oil contained alpha-pinene, camphene, beta-pinene, 1,8-cineole, camphor, iso-borneol, borneol, beta-gurjunene, caryophyllene, delta-cadinene, elemol and germacrone. Identification and characterization of individual oil component were carried out by thin layer chromatography and combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. It also has been studied the inhibition activity of the essential oil using diffusion techniques and holes. The essential oil showed inhibition upon Escherichia coli, Streptococcus beta haemolyticus and Staphylococcus aureus. The ethyl acetate fraction showed larger inhibition upon Staphylococcus aureus than the n-hexane fraction. Keyword: Temugiring Curcuma heyneana -- essential oil -- antibac- terial activity
