Summary:The role of local government of Sintang in handling of the environment damage needs to be improved in order that the preservation of environment function is still kept. It needs an existence of law product, which is a local regulation as a reference in the management of environment. This research aims to describe how the role of local government of Sintang in implementing their authority and what efforts and obstacles which influence the role of local government in handling of the environment damage. This research was done in the Regency of Sintang, Province of West Kalimantan, with a focus on Division of Environment in the Regency Secretariat of Sintang. In this research the method which was used, was the policy research with the descriptive qualitative analysis. Determination of sample used the purposive sample method. Primary data was obtained by interview with the Division of Environment and officials in the local government of Sintang, and field research, while secondary data was obtained from related department. The results of this research indicate that: 1) the role of local government of Sintang in handling of the environment damage, which was effected of illegal gold mining, was evaluated good enough. It was shown by instruction from Regent of Sintang to sub districts staffs to straighten up. 2) In 2002 and 2003, the local government of Sintang, under the Division of Environment, did watching and monitoring in 8 sub districts. The results of activities had been recommended to Regent of Sintang. 3) Obstacles, which were faced in the management of environment, where there are no local regulation as a guideline and no proponent means.
