Summary: | This research sets two objectives: theoretical and pragmatic objectives. The first objectives is to study a collection of poems entitled O, Amuk, Kapak by Sutardji Calzoum Bachri and Hai Ti by Ibrahim Sattah based on an intertextual approach. This approach is expected to enable the interpretation of Sutardji CB's and Ibrahim Sattah's poems, which show mutual hypogram with Malay charms, to enrich and expand the reader's comprehension. The second objectives is to help uninformed readers in appreciating alternative (inconvensional) literary works such that they comprehend the values of literary works.
The research uses intertextual method. Intertextuality is a principle of relation between texts which departs from the assumption that a literary work, including poetry, is not produced in cultural emptiness. Therefore, a poem is actually a response for other previous poems. The response may take the form of violation against, or compliance with, tradition. Consequently, a process of text transformation is inevitable. To tranform means to put some¬thing into another form which is basically the same. This process recognizes a hypogram, a text which becomes the background for the creation of another text, or a poem which becomes the background for creation of another poem. Hypogram will be used as the tool to analyze the collection of poems entitled O, Amuk, Kapak by Sutardji Calzoum Bachri and Hai Ti by Ibrahim Sattah which adopt Malay charm as the background for their creation as reflected in the principle of their intertextuality: the power of sound, word inversion, word-paly, word repetition, nonsense, typography, theme, and other lan¬guage devices. The meaning comprehension also needs to corporate extrin¬sic element to obtain optimum results.
