Summary:ABSTRACT A nonlinear-inelastic dynamic analysis procedure of reinforced concrete frame structures considering the hysteretic behavior of the elements has been developed. Meyer and Ronfaiel hysteretic model has been adopted to account for the element inelastic behavior. The nonlinear equation of motions of the structure was written in incremental form, and integrated numerically using Newmark's Beta Method (step by step integration procedure) with average acceleration (Beta=1/4). The technique used was considered to be unconditionally stable. The structural respons were evaluated at every time increment A t =0.1 second. Stiffness and damping matrices were evaluated at the beginning of each interval but assumed to be constant up to the end of that interval. Hence, the nonlinear behavior of the structure was approximated by a sequence of successively changing linear systems. A damage factor concept was introduced to estimate the degree of the damage that would occur on the elements. The analisis procedure has been implemented into a computer program, and a numerical example has been considered to show the accuracy of the proposed method. It was shown that the combination of nonlinear-inelastic dynamic analysis and the damage factor concept could give a better estimation for anticipating the degree of damage that likely to occur on the structure after experiencing earthquake exitation. Several iterations are needed in the design process to obtain the final dimensions and reinforcements that result in acceptable level of damage.
