ABSTRACTS In October 1988 the banking industry was deregulated which substantially increased the competition. The comprehensive deregulation include an improvement in prudential regulations and the supervisory framework, a further reduction in the scope of credit programs, further relaxation in the control on interest rates, a loosening of barriers in the banking industry. As a result since 1988 growth of the financial sector has been dramatic. The relaxation on branching requirements and competition led a dramatic increase in the numbers of bank office, especially of private domestic bank whose branches expanded rapidly. The deregulation also introduced some problems in the bank industry. The probletfi of loans appeared to have risen in the period of rapid expansion after the deregulation that lead to financial distress. A number of banks with problems have already emerged and have been rescued by arranging for a merger or take-over by another bank. In this article emphasize the impact of the 1988 deregulation policy on the banking industry and anticipate the prospect of the banking industry. Keywords: banking, deregulation
