Summary:A survey had been conducted at Nongkojajar, Batu and Pujon on July up to September, 1990 in order to investigate the productivity of dairy cattle kept by dairy smallholders. Those two locations were the main milk supplier in East Java. Two hundred and twelve (212) respondents at Nongkojajar, 182 at Batu and Pujon were taken by random. Data were collected by questionaire and analysed on milk production, Natural Increase, calving interval, gestation period, cows production and replacement needed and on the output of dairy cattles, which was taken out of the population. From the data analysis pointed out that the performance of dairy cattle at those two locations were as follows : milk production at Nongkojajar was 23.65 liters, at Batu and Pujon was 25.41 liters per herds, or 11.90 liters and 12.29 liters respectively per lactating cow or 9.84 liters and 9.25 liters respectively per adult cow, or 5.67 liters and 5.20 liters respectively per Animal Unit The percentage of pregnant cows were 54.44% and 47.55%, and the lactation cows were 78.57% and 78.68% respectively. Birth rate at Nongkojajar was 34.76%, at Batu and Pujon was 34.02% from the population. The mortalities were 6.61% and 4.38%, respectively. Calving interval was 423.51 days at Nongkojcdar, at Batu and Pujon was 400,29 days, while the gestation periods were 276.37 and 278.16 days respectively. Natural Increase at Nongkojajar was 28.16%, at Batu and Pujon was 29.64%. The result of this study showed that the performance of dairy cattle at those two locations were not significantly different If the performance above can be used to compute the cows production at those two locations at Nongkojajar was 14.67% at Batu and Pujon was 16.52%. The replacements needed were 11.80% and 10.34% respectively. The output of those two locations to produce cattle which was taken out of the population be slaughtered, were 22.84% and 26. 14% respectively. It be concluded that the milk production and the productivity of the smallholder's dairy cattle at those two locations were reliable and not different.
